Interested in a premium slice of AMG greatness? Then this listing on Bringatrailer might just be for you. The engineers at AMG have been known to create some pretty awesome machines, and the SL65 AMG Black Series is right up there among the best. The limited-series sports car was offered only for the 2009 model year, and 350 units were produced in total, with 175 earmarked for the US market.
It is based on the already bonkers SL65 AMG sports car. However, the Black Series badging means the insanity of the base car has been dialled up by several notches. The SL65 AMG Black Series boasts a more aggressive stance with flared fenders, mostly made of carbon fibre and a rear wing anchored to the decklid. Thanks to the enlarged fenders, the car’s track is widened by 4.5 inches at the front and 4.1 inches at the rear compared to the standard SL65 AMG. The changes to the vehicle are not all cosmetic, though.
The SL65 AMG Black Series gained bigger turbos that not only helped boost power output but also enhanced intercooling and quickened the throttle response. The tweaks to the powertrain increased the power output to a heady 661 hp, a 57 hp bump over the SL65 AMG. In 2009, that power was enough to make the SL65 AMG Black Series a genuine threat even to established Italian supercars like the Lamborghini Murcielago and Ferrari California. That power was mated to a 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode and fed to the rear wheels.
The formidable AMG road rocket is a handful, but in skilled hands, it can rocket to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds and continue accelerating to a 199 mph top speed.
This particular example put up for sale is finished with white metallic paint. It contrasts nicely with the black Exclusive leather upholstery on the interior. The car sits on Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires wrapped around AMG twin-spoke alloy wheels, 19 inches in front and 20 inches at the rear.
The SL65 AMG Black Series comes loaded with features that make for an engaging ride with every experience. There is an adjustable suspension setup, Electronic Stability Control, a speed-sensitive carbon fibre rear spoiler and an active roll stabilization system. For the interior, expect carbon fibre trim, dual-zone automatic climate control, Keyless-Go and an aftermarket audio system.
The car is well-used, with 9,000 miles on the odometer and touched-up paint chips on the front bumper cover. However, the Carfax report is clean, and this SL65 AMG Black Series should have no trouble finding a new home. No true AMG enthusiast should pass up the opportunity to own such a great performance car.
