The prevailing economic unrest and political hostility has not only shattered the old markets players and the new entrants but also engulfed the plans of bringing new car companies in the country. After several delays, according to the sources, Premier Motors Limited (PML) finally shelves the plan to bring German giant Volkswagen in Pakistan – thanks to government’s not-well-thought economic policies and rapid uptick in political trouble.

The Story began earlier in November 2018 when German carmaker and Premier Motors Limited (PML) signed an agreement of assembling Volkswagen commercial vehicles in Pakistan. Meanwhile PML also got the Greenfield Status under the policy 2016. Then comes pandemic, causing significant delays which particularly hit the plan hard.

How Series of Delays Concluded?

Intriguingly, where the Volkswagen project maintained an exceedingly sluggish pace of progress, other car assemblers managed to swiftly begins their endeavors while swerving the speed bumps.

Initially, there were announcements that Volkswagen cars assembled within the country would become operational on the streets by 2021; however, this timeline was subsequently pushed to 2023. Concurrently, there were indications that the same facility would also be employed for the local production of Skoda vehicles.

Surprisingly, the episode translating the dilly-delaying didn’t conclude here. Earlier this year, during the visit to the plant, the Consul General of Germany, Dr Rüdiger Lotz informed a new delay, announcing that the project is on the track to be finished by 2024, also boasted the capacity of producing 32,000 units annually.

To cut a long story short, after a long series of delays one after the other, as per our sources, the likelihood of hitting the Volkswagen and Skoda cars the local roads seem highly implausible, particularly considering the worsening economic conditions and the prevailing political uncertainty in the country.
