GMC acadia to grow into three row suv for next generation
GMC Acadia SUV is coming back for a third generation in a larger three-row form.
The current model was designed in a more crossover form, significantly smaller than the original first-generation Acadia. For the 2024 model year. The carmaker decided to go back to what made Acadia popular in the first place. The news was made public by GMC Boss, Mark Reuss, during the company’s investor day.
“So, alongside the Traverse, we’ll move the GMC Acadia to a slightly different size standpoint,”
he said. “So, this comes in a little bigger than the old Acadia, so it’s a big transformation for GMC and its part in the market. Again, very handsome, very much GMC truck premium; you know, it’s really a, just a professional grade SUV in this three-row category for us.”
The new-old design will definitely put Acadia in direct competition with some of the most popular names in the SUV segment, the model will have to fight for its market share against the likes of the Ford Explorer, Jeep Grand Cherokee L, Kia Telluride, and the Hyundai Palisade.

But what made GMC change Acadia’s course so suddenly? Rumors say GMC originally planned to put the car on the same platform as the GMC Canyon and Chevy Colorado, effectively pulling it to the crossover/ small SUV segment. But then the company realized that this will leave an empty spot on their lineup, a quite large one. The decision could spiral into losing a significant portion of the brand’s consumer base and market share, something that they cannot afford. This realization will eventually bring back the large Acadia that we know.
Now with the smaller platform out of play, the current Acadia’s C1XX-2 will definitely need some updates. We still have no details about that or about the new design features that the SUV may have.
It’s highly unlikely that the 2024 Acadia would feature any form of electrification yet. The car will surely run on the familiar 3.6-liter V6, with some minor updates, perhaps. Other features may include Super Cruise and the pneumatic suspension system we saw previously on the Acadia AT4X.
