Classic Inspiration

It’s like the racecars of the 1960s filtered through the technology of 2023. This is the Alfa Romeo 33 Stradale. If the Le Mans racing circuit dreams, it dreams of this. If Enzo Ferrari were alive, his heart would crack.

Sadly, you can’t buy one. The 33 in the name has two meanings. One is that the car is a tribute to the Alfa Romeo Tipo 33 of 1960s racing fame. The other is that Alfa plans to build just 33 of them, and they’ve all been sold before they were even built.

Still, let’s spend a minute on this one, for beauty’s sake. You’ve got a long weekend ahead, anyway.

Gas or Electric Options

Alfa Romeo this week revealed a supercar that “respectfully celebrates the brand’s history and takes it forward into the future.” The 33 Stradale (meaning “road” as if this were the roadgoing version of a racecar, but we’re aware of no plans to race it) is intended to link Alfa Romeo’s past to its future.

Accordingly, buyers can choose (could choose? They’ve all chosen now) between a gasoline powertrain and an electric one.

Buyers who opt for fire get a 2.9-liter twin-turbo V6 “delivering over 620” horsepower, Alfa says, as if even they’re afraid to quantify it. At 2.9 liters, it appears to be a version of the mill found in the Giulia Quadrifoglio, not the V6 from the MC20 supercar.

Power goes through an 8-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission to the rear wheels, with an electronic limited-slip differential.

Those who choose lightning get 750 horsepower. We’d love to tell you more, but that’s all Alfa has released about the electric version. The company does promise a 280-mile range between charges. Still, it specifies that that measurement comes from the European testing cycle, which tends to produce much longer ranges than America’s EPA testing cycle.

So, it’s likely among the shorter-range electric vehicles on the market. If you need a drawback, that’s the best we can do.

Carbon Fiber and Aluminum

Either way, you get a double-arm suspension with active shock absorbers and the axle lift attached to an aluminum H-frame and a carbon-fiber monocoque. The roof — what little of it isn’t taken up by hinged butterfly doors — is also carbon fiber.

Brembo carbon-ceramic brakes respond to brake-by-wire technology.

Alfa cites a top speed of 207 mph and a 0-62 mph time of “under three seconds” in either configuration.

Alfa says, “The car’s tuning will be supported by F1 driver Valtteri Bottas,” as if that work isn’t done yet. But we suppose Bottas’ season isn’t over quite yet, even if Max Verstappen settled the Formula 1 question early this year.

Interior From a Time Before Screens (But With Screens)

Alfa Romeo says of the inside, “The driver and passengers can experience the precise intent to offer an approach to driving totally purified of all the interactions required in a conventional car.”

That’s a fancy way of saying screens are kept to a minimum. The driver gets a digital screen instead of a gauge cluster. There is a central display screen to manage some settings, but it retracts into the dashboard. If you need entertainment in this car, you’re doing it wrong.

There aren’t even visible air vents, though Alfa assures us they’re “hidden in the volume of the dashboard.” So the only thing constantly visible is lovely aluminum switchgear inspired by aviation design.

As for price, Alfa Romeo won’t say. There’s little reason to, with every example already sold. So let’s enjoy the beauty of the thing and dream.
