Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1958 Pontiac Star Chief.

The “fabulous fifties” were a time when American automotive design was at one of its most creative high points. This Star Chief two-door hardtop comes with all the characteristic late-1950s brightwork, not to mention service history that includes work to the fuel system, brakes, and exhaust. Its 370cid V8 sends power rearward through a three-speed automatic transmission. This Star Chief is being offered by a selling dealer in Montana with a clear title.

An exterior restoration was carried out in 2016 that included a full respray in the factory-correct two-tone combination of Patina Ivory and Redwood Copper. In addition to all the brightwork, this ’58 has a set of Coker Classic wide whitewall tires over color-matched 14-inch steel wheels to complete the period-correct look.

The full-size Star Chief model was assembled on the General Motors A-body platform and first went on sale for the 1954 year. At the time, it was a top-tier version of the Chieftain and could be readily identified by chrome star trim. That was the only year that the Star Chief was powered by an inline-eight; subsequent years used a variety of V8 powerplants.

By 1958, the Star Chief had evolved into its third generation and was now based on the B-platform. This Star Chief offers the newer, larger 370cid V8 mated to a Hydra-Matic three-speed automatic transmission (this was essentially a reworked 347cid from the outgoing model). Maintenance history according to the selling dealer has included replacement of the battery, radiator cap, engine and transmission seals, exhaust system, and oil within the last seven years.

Included in that same restoration was an overhaul of the interior, which has a two-tone cloth and vinyl theme that matches the body. Options include power steering and an AM radio. The gauges and clock have been rebuilt, but the selling dealer states that true mileage on the chassis is unknown.

At 65 years old, this Star Chief has clearly been well-loved, and the recent cosmetic and mechanical work should ensure that it has many miles of service yet ahead. Add it to your watch list and take a closer look!

The auction for this 1958 Pontiac Star Chief ends on Monday, July 24, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. (PDT)
