Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this restored 1972 Pontiac LeMans GT two-door hardtop. This Poncho receives power from a rebuilt 455cid mated to a wide-ratio four-speed manual transmission. Sold new at Jim Simmons Pontiac-Buick in Concord, North Carolina, the LeMans GT you see here is equipped with power steering and front disc brakes, reproduction ducktail spoiler, Rally II wheels, and GT sword stripe. Finished in special-order light blue over a black vinyl interior, this LeMans GT is offered with Connecticut registration in the seller’s name.

This car is interesting on several levels. First, it’s a 1972 LeMans with the GT package, which was an evolution of the 1970½-1971 GT-37. The GT package, available on the Hardtop or Coupe, included a HD three-speed manual with Hurst shifter, dual exhausts with side-splitters, G70 x 14 white-letter tires on Rally II wheels sans trim rings, body-colored side mirrors (on hardtops), and sword stripe.

Note the odd special-order paint code.

But this LeMans GT also was special-ordered in a color not ordinarily available on the LeMans — a color that’s come to be known as “Carolina Blue.” It seems there’s handful of cars that have been ordered in a color reminiscent to that of the UNC Tar Heels, and this is one of the few.

Lastly, it features a ducktail spoiler, something that was new for 1972 but only 2-3 were built by the factory, plus at least one dealer-installed beauty exists. Someone began reproducing them several years ago, so that’s what you see here. Looks great, right?

During its 2014 restoration by 2014 by Muscle Car Designs of Joliet, Illinois, the exterior was repainted in the original college-inspired hue. Features include black GT side stripes, color-keyed mirrors, the aforementioned spoiler, and dual exhausts.

Factory Rally II wheels with trim rings are wrapped in Firehawk Indy 500 raised-white-letter tires.

The interior is fitted with a black vinyl interior, with the front being a bench seat. Features include woodgrain dashboard trim, AM radio, Soft-Ray tinted glass, and power steering.

Instrumentation includes a 120-mph speedometer and aftermarket auxiliary gauges. The five-digit mechanical odometer reads 42,775 miles.

The rebuilt 455cid V8 that replaced the original 350 two-barrel was installed during the 2014 restoration. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a Muncie M20 wide-ratio four-speed manual transmission and 3.55 rear gears.

Front power disc brakes and rear drums assist with halting the motion.

The auction for this 1971 Pontiac LeMans GT two-door hardtop ends Monday, September 18, 2023, at 12:30 p.m. (PDT)
