Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL.

The Mercedes R107 SL cars that were built from 1971 until 1989 are the single longest running model in the of the Stuttgart company’s history. When new they were one of the best automotive symbols of having made it in the quest for money, power, and success. If you wanted to demonstrate to your friends that you were on top of the world, you bought a Mercedes SL. While to a certain degree this is still the case, it is not the same as it was in the 1970s and ’80s. These were the cars owned by CEOs, movie stars, record producers, and famous musicians.

All of them were on to something as the R107 Mercedes SL cars are likely the finest single model car that the company ever built. The car was nicknamed “der Panzerwagen” (the tank) by the design and engineering team, and the minute you get into a car likes this 560SL and close the door you know why.

These SL cars are not sports cars but touring cars. They did have enough power to feel sporting due to the increase in engine size, which gave the 560SL a 0-60 time of 7.5 seconds, making it the fastest US specification R107 roadster that was built.

The seller describes this 1987 Mercedes-Benz 560SL as having only covered 56,000 miles from new. It is said to have been garage-kept over its life and features include power windows, power steering, power anti-lock disc brakes, air conditioning with automatic climate control, a driver’s airbag, and power mirrors. It is painted in black and equipped with a black soft convertible top over a tan leather interior. It also includes its black removable hardtop, a hardtop stand, the original first aid kit and hardtop tools, receipts, brochures, an owner’s manual, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear title.

The included photos show a car that looks to be exceptionally clean with what is said to be original paint and an original interior. Looking closely at the photos provided, I see nothing that would make me doubt that claim. The dash also shows no visible cracks and the wood looks to be in excellent shape. The only change I would make to this car would be to swap out the Mercedes factory wheels currently on it for the correct Mercedes 560SL wheels. I only say that because I like the look of them better, and a set of the wheels is routinely available for a few hundred dollars on eBay. I made this exact wheel swap on mine, as mine had the same wheels as this car.

This 560SL is a great way to enjoy collector car ownership in a package that it not only extremely well built but also easy to live with. These cars are the very definition of cruisers, and I loved the drive I took cross country to Monterey 10 years ago in mine. Yes, it is a bit thirsty, but it is also a relaxed and classy way to drive the interstate.
