Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this “carryover” 1966 Shelby GT350. Car SFM6S006 is #6 of 252 GT350s built during Ford’s changeover from 1965 to 1966, so this vehicle started life as 1965 Mustangs but was converted by Shelby American into an early 1966 GT350s. As such, this vehicle features a combination of 1965 and 1966 GT350 exterior, interior, and mechanical components. Power is provided by a 289 Hi-Po V8 paired with a four-speed manual gearbox. Features include 15-inch Shelby/Cragar wheels, Detroit Locker rear axle, woodgrain steering wheel, and KONI shock absorbers. Finished in white with blue Le Mans stripes over a black vinyl interior, this GT350 comes from the selling dealer with a 2017-issued 1966 Shelby Registry Report from Howard C. Pardee of the Shelby American Automobile Club, and a clear title.

When built by Shelby, this GT350 did not feature Le Mans stripes. It also is one of 78 carryover cars built without a back seat, just like the 1965s. Other unusual features include steel wheels, rear over-rider traction bars, and fiberglass hood with steel frame. 1966 GT350 components include clear Plexiglas rear-quarter windows, functional rear brake-cooling scoops, and rear exhaust turndowns.

On October 28, 1965, SFM6S006 was shipped to Don Wagner Ford Sales, Inc. in Vandalia, Ohio. After passing through a series of owners, it was purchased by Curt Vogt of Cobra Automotive Inc. in Wallingford, Connecticut, and given a restoration in 2007 that included new front clip, drivetrain, and other new parts. Exterior features include hood pins, hood scoop, driver-side mirror, and “G.T. 350” lettering and badging. In its present form, this GT350 is finished in Wimbledon White with Guardsman Blue Le Mans stripes.

The 15-inch five-spoke Cragar wheels are wrapped in P215/65R15 (front) and P235/60R15 (rear) BFGoodrich Radial T/A tires.

The cabin is furnished with black vinyl front bucket seats and 1966-specific rear package shelf in place of the rear seat. Interior elements from the 1965 model-year GT350 include black dash pad, concave glove box door, and pleated door panels; nineteen sixty-six model-year GT350 components include the instrument cluster, dash-mounted tachometer, simulated woodgrain steering wheel with Cobra center emblem and, of course, the Plexiglass rear-quarter windows. Other features include manual steering, lap belts, and radio-delete. The trunk contains a patterned vinyl mat and a spare tire.

The instrument panel consists of a 140-mph speedometer, dash-mounted 9,000-rpm tachometer, and gauges for the fuel level, oil pressure, amps, and coolant temperature. The five-digit odometer shows 56,786 miles.

Under the hood is a 306-horsepower 289 High-Performance V8 that sends power to the rear wheels through a four-speed manual transmission and Detroit Locker rear axle. When new, the engine was painted gloss black instead of Ford Blue like later 1966 GT350s. Engine bay features include “hollow-letter” rocker covers, export brace, and Monte Carlo bar. According to the selling dealer, a new drivetrain was built and installed as part of the 2007 restoration.

Suspension hardware consists of lowered front A-arms, over-rider rear traction bars, and KONI shock absorbers.

A 2017-issued 1966 Shelby Registry Report from Howard C. Pardee of the Shelby American Automobile Club will be included with the purchase.

The online auction for this “carryover” 1966 Shelby GT350 ends on Tuesday, July 11, 2023, at 12:00 p.m. (PDT)
