As a stark reflection of Pakistan’s economic struggles, the auto industry shows visible signs of grappling with a severe downturn. Car sales have plummeted by a staggering 43.9% as compared to the previous fiscal year. According to the Pakistan Automotive Manufacturers Association (PAMA), only 16,021 units of cars were sold from July to September 2023, painting a grim picture for automakers and the economy.

Car Sales Numbers

When compared to the figures for July-Sept 2022-2023, the numbers for July-Sept 2023-2024 decline sharply by 43.9%. In the previous fiscal year up to September, 28,571 car sales were recorded, but only 16,021 units have been sold this year.

Buses & Trucks

Buses also sold fewer units than the previous year by 31.9%. However, the truck sector, which usually maintains stability, also experienced a 47.1% decrease in sales compared to the previous year. 2 and 3-wheelers also saw a decline in sales by 9.9%.

Interestingly, amidst the gloom, the farm tractors sector has seen a rise in sales. A whopping 64.1% increase in sales was seen this year in 2023-2024.

Factors Contributing to the Decline

The reasons behind this alarming drop are multifaceted. Over the past three months, the industry has been hit by production cuts and uncertainty about the value of the Pakistani rupee. This has made it increasingly challenging for potential buyers to make a purchase. 

After the government relaxed import restrictions, there was a slight uptick in car sales last month. Nevertheless, the ongoing economic decline remains a significant challenge, and the primary culprit is the downward trend in economic graphs. This hardship is clearly reflected in the stark decline in sales figures reported by PAMA.
