In a shocking move, the Punjab government has recently implemented a drastic hike in driving license fees, leaving motorists in disbelief and financial distress. Effective from January 17, 2023, the new fee structure has seen an astronomical surge, with some categories experiencing an alarming increase of up to 2600%.
The revised fee schedule reveals jaw-dropping numbers, painting a grim picture for drivers seeking to renew or obtain licenses in the region. The old 5-year fees, which were already a financial burden for many, have been overhauled to staggering extents.
New Fee Structure
- Motorcyclists, who were previously paying a reasonable 60 rupees for a 5-year license, are now faced with an exorbitant fee of Rs. 4900 – an alarming 791% increase.
- Car and Jeep owners, not spared from this financial blow, now face a 1100% surge, with fees skyrocketing from Rs. 550 to Rs. 11400.
- The Light Transport (LTE) category witnesses an unprecedented 1205% increase, with fees soaring from Rs. 550 to a whopping Rs. 12400.
- However, the Heavy Transport (HTE) category takes the lead in this fee frenzy, witnessing an alarming 2656% surge from Rs. 950 to Rs. 12400.
- Even tractor and commercial tractor owners are not exempt from the financial squeeze, as their fees witness a substantial 2100% increase, catapulting from Rs. 450 to Rs. 9900.
While the government may argue that the increased fees are necessary for infrastructure development and road safety initiatives, the burden on the common man cannot be ignored.
Fee Hike Challenged in Lahore High Court
A week after the caretaker government of Punjab increased driving license fee in the province, the move may face a suspension following a petition filed against it in the Lahore High Court (LHC).
Rana Ali Hasnain, a citizen, has engaged the services of his lawyer to present the case before the provincial apex court, listing the Punjab government, Inspector General Punjab, and other officials as respondents in the petition.
Rana Ali Hasnain urges the court to issue orders for the retraction of the notification and instruct the relevant officials to issue licenses at the previous rate.
