From when the rubber first hit the road back in 1978, the Porsche 928 has stood for innovation. Built from aluminium rather than sheet steel, with integrated, colour-coded bumpers and electrically driven pop-up headlights, this was a car like no other. And thanks to Design 911, you can make yours different to every other 928, too!
First up, the engine.
If you’ve hit 24,000 miles, it’s time to get down and dirty under the bonnet. These service kits for multiple incarnations of the 928 have all the plugs, filters and cartridges you need to get your engine purring again. If you’re well past the 24K mark, there’s a kit for every 2,000-mile increment, too. The kits cover five different models and every year from 1981 to 1995. It’s not sexy, but if you want to keep the bodywork rolling, you must grease the wheels. (Note: wheel grease not included!)
Pump action…
Water is key for an air-cooled engine and the water pump in the 928 works hard. There can be no compromise on parts quality in this area. So, don’t do that. Check out our range of water pumps, gaskets – and there’s even a full pump, belt and pulley kit.
Similarly, the rad is key in a setup like this and it’s not something you want to try and pick up on eBay. Our range of aluminium radiators have different oil-cooling capabilities to match the profile of your 928, and other accessories to ensure your car remains the coolest around, in every sense, including an ingenious radiator fin straightening tool.
Gasket case?
Gaskets and seals are the quiet heroes of the Porsche. They’re not glamorous and won’t turn any heads on the high street…until they fail. Then you realise what a great job they’ve been doing all this time. Whether you’re replacing something that’s perished or want to get ahead of the curve and you’re planning to replace them as part of a bigger engine rebuild project, then we can help.
This gasket set covers everything from 1980-86, while this one includes multiple Porsche 928 models between 1986 and 1996. If you’re running the 4.5L 928, made between 1987 and 1982, then this will do the trick, for the 1980 to 1986 run you’ll need this one, and for the 1986 through to 1996 versions of the 928 GTS, you’ll want this.
You’ve probably not considered getting an engine cylinder exhaust valve kit – it’s not top of mind for many of us – but when you need it, you’ll suddenly be very interested indeed. See also ‘valve stem seals’, ‘cylinder head inlet valves’, and ‘valve guides’. Should the worst happen, or you’re thinking of prioritising prevention above cure, then you’ll wish you’d bookmarked this page.
Ring of fire?
Piston rings are another undervalued engine part and bearing in mind where they’re hidden in the block, it pays to make sure you seal your combustion chamber correctly. We offer two options: original Porsche, direct from the manufacturer piston rings ensure a precise fit and compatibility. while ‘after-market’ equivalents are a cost-effective alternative while still meeting or exceed OEM specifications for comparable performance and durability. And we have both.
Join the chain gang!
Buying ‘iffy’ camshaft timing chains and tensioners should be filed under ‘false economy’. The Porsche four-valve technology is one of the sensitive parts of these otherwise robust engines and regular chain replacement and other sliding elements is essential. Our timing chain maintenance kit says, “Made in Germany”. ‘Nuff said.
