History of chassis 022

Chassis 022 was the XJR-15 driven by Ian Flux in 1991’s JaguarSport Intercontinental Challenge. The three-race series offered $1m for the winner of the final contest and a Jaguar XJR-S for the victors in events one and two. Ian Flux drove the car on behalf of JaguarSport / TWR in all three rounds which supported that year’s Formula 1 races at Monaco, Silverstone and Spa.

At Monaco, Flux qualified chassis 022 ninth but dropped five places during the 16 lap race and ultimately crossed the line 14th.

However, he did much better at Silverstone starting from fourth.

The 20 lap race was an extraordinary contest with the standard of driving sometimes more akin to a demolition derby. Despite the early chaos throughout the field, Flux held fourth and soon found himself at the head of the field. Unfortunately though, a missed gear allowed Juan Fangio II into the lead and, two laps before the chequered flag, Bob Wollek went passed to take the runner up spot. Nevertheless, Flux finished a creditable third to bag the final podium place.

With $1m on the line for the winner in Belgium, Jaguar decided the finale would run for an undisclosed number of laps. All the drivers knew was that the chequered flag would fall after at least six laps.

Flux did the tenth fastest time in qualifying and brought chassis 022 home in eighth position.

In July 1991, chassis 022 was displayed at the Silverstone Historic Festival as depicted here.

The following year, TWR sold chassis 022 to a Japanese collector for £500,000.

In 2001, the car returned to Europe having been purchased by Jaguar specialist JD Classics who, between 2002 and ‘03, campaigned it in the Historic Group C Championship alongside their XJR-11.

In 2004, JD Classics prepared the car for road use, registered it G15 XJR and sold it to a customer.
