In response to the alarming surge in smog levels, the Lahore High Court has taken a bold step to curb contributing factors. During a recent hearing led by Justice Shahid Karim, fines were imposed to address specific concerns.

Expressing dissatisfaction with the Lahore Development Authority (LDA), the court emphasized the need for proactive measures. Justice Karim questioned the timing of development projects, stressing that preparations for smog should have commenced six months earlier. The lack of clarity on project funding also raised concerns.

Fines for Car Washing

To deter practices that exacerbate pollution, the court announced fines of Rs 5,000 for improper parking and Rs 3,000 for home car washing. These fines are earmarked for the funds of the Water and Sanitation Agency (WASA), aligning punitive measures with environmental initiatives.

Water Crisis

Acknowledging the escalating water crisis, the court directed the Lahore Development Authority to convey its orders to the Registrar of Housing Societies. This underscores a comprehensive approach to address environmental challenges beyond just smog.

Stricter Helmet Laws

In an effort to enhance road safety, the Judicial Water Commission has proposed a Rs 2,000 increase in fines for not wearing helmets. This move aims to instill a sense of responsibility and adherence to safety measures among the citizens.

The Lahore High Court’s decisive actions signal a commitment to tackling environmental issues head-on, urging citizens to play an active role in preserving the city’s well-being.
