Toyota is set to make a significant entrance into the realm of electric vehicles with its showcase at the 2023 Japan Mobility Show. Among the highlights is a groundbreaking concept—an all-electric version of the iconic Land Cruiser SUV.

This conceptual Land Cruiser, known as the “Se,” has the potential to pose a serious challenge to other three-row electric SUVs or could be viewed as a forward-looking glimpse into the future.

Dimensions

Accommodating seven passengers, the concept vehicle comes with precise size specifications, including a 120.08-inch wheelbase and overall dimensions of 202.76 inches in length, 78.35 inches in width, and 67.13 inches in height. Notably, it exhibits a broader stance and a lower height compared to the conventional 2024 gas-powered Land Cruiser, which has a wheelbase of approximately 112 inches.

Design Language

The Land Cruiser Se boasts a distinctive design, resembling an angular boat, featuring a lengthy hood, a sweeping windshield, and a rounded rear end with a taillight design reminiscent of a visor.

The extended space between the wheels is likely designated for accommodating a battery, and the overall design prioritizes aerodynamics, evident in features such as digital side view mirror cameras. Toyota emphasizes the serene nature of electric vehicles, highlighting how the quietness contributes to a comfortable driving experience in urban areas—an attribute that the automaker marvels at, underscoring its revisited electric vehicle strategy.

Specs & Features

Despite its electric nature, Toyota assures that the Land Cruiser Se maintains its off-road capabilities, providing good news for enthusiasts of the traditional gas-powered off-roader. The concept’s appearance may suggest a sleek urban ride, but its capacity for handling rough terrain remains intact, challenging preconceptions.

In addition to the Land Cruiser Se, Toyota introduces another innovative concept—a midsize electric pickup truck named the EPU, designed for outdoor activities. Featuring a cabin that can open to the deck, this truck, with dimensions of 199.61 inches in length and 75.2 inches in width, presents a streamlined design distinct from existing recreational pickups.

Toyota also invites attention to its Neo Steer cockpit concept, conceived to enhance the love for cars and deliver joy and excitement in mobility for everyone. Inspired by motorcycle controls, this concept allows users to manage acceleration and braking through levers—a design reminiscent of accessibility modifications for traditional vehicles. Notably, Toyota has previously experimented with simulated manual transmissions in its pursuit of making electric vehicles more captivating.

Amidst a rush by other automakers to dominate the electric family hauler segment, Toyota’s electric Land Cruiser emerges as a pragmatic and substantial contender. Its unveiling aligns with a period when electric vehicles, such as Hyundai’s EV9 three-row SUV, are gaining prominence. Toyota’s challenge now is to ensure the success of its electric endeavors by avoiding pitfalls and delivering on the promise embodied by the Land Cruiser concept.
