The 2024 Geneva Motor Show saw a shift towards practicality with the reveal of the new MG 3 Hybrid. This new model replaces the previous petrol version, known for its budget-friendly price tag, and offers a hybrid alternative with a focus on efficiency and value.

What’s New Under the Hood?

This marks MG‘s first foray into self-charging hybrids, placing the MG 3 in competition with popular models like the Toyota Yaris and Renault Clio E-Tech. While efficiency is a key focus, MG also highlights the car’s performance capabilities.

Combining a 1.5-liter petrol engine with a powerful electric motor, the MG 3 boasts 191 horsepower and a 0-62mph sprint time of just 8.0 seconds.

Adding to its eco-friendly credentials, the MG 3 features a 1.83kWh battery, larger than its rivals, which translates to a longer electric-only range. MG claims the car can achieve a combined fuel economy of 64mpg and CO2 emissions of 100g/km – impressive figures for a supermini.

Looks Aren’t Everything

The design of the new MG 3 might not win any awards. While not terrible, its generic and somewhat uninspiring style, including the prominent shark-like grille, might not turn heads. However, MG stays true to its reputation for generous equipment offerings.

Features

The MG 3 Hybrid comes in two trims: SE and Trophy. Even the base SE offers a wealth of features, including a 10.25-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, and navigation, a digital driver’s display, a parking camera, and various driver assistance technologies. Higher trims add further conveniences like keyless entry, heated seats, and a 360-degree camera.

Pricing and Availability

Exact pricing details are still under wraps, but expect the MG 3 Hybrid to move away from its predecessor’s budget-friendly territory. With the added complexity of the hybrid powertrain, the price is estimated to be around £20,000, which might still undercut the benchmark Toyota Yaris hybrid, starting at £22,630.

While we wait for a confirmed launch date and price, the MG 3 Hybrid offers a promising combination of efficiency, performance, and features for a competitive price.
