Yesterday, we informed you about the launch of the all-new Toyota Land Cruiser 250 Series, but Toyota had another secret up its sleeve as it made a surprise new model announcement. The company announced an upgraded version of the legendary Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series with changes in exterior and interior, new safety features, and an all-new 4-cylinder turbodiesel engine option along with the age-old and famous V8 option.

This is the fourth upgrade for the 70 series, and it will also be available in its home market in Japan, where it went off sale due to not complying with safety regulations.

Exterior Upgrades

The new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series gets these upgraded options in the exterior:

  • Round LED headlights
  • Honeycomb grille
  • Protruding turn signals
  • Cleaner lines in the new bumper but kept the unpainted plastic look
  • Original block taillights
  • Body-colored panels

Overall, the new 70 series looks a lot like its original 70 series from 1984. Furthermore, the car will be available in Single Cab, Double Cab, Troop Carrier, and Wagon body styles. The SUV measures 4,890 mm long, 1,870 mm wide, and 1,920 mm tall, with a wheelbase of 2,730 mm. It means it is shorter than both Land Cruiser 250 Series and 300 Series.

Interior

The changes in the interior are:

  • 4.2-inch screen with retro graphics
  • Revised central console
  • 6.7-inch infotainment touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto (Australia)

Safety

The new 70 Series gets Toyota Safety Sense Suit, including:

  • Road Sing Assist
  • Auto High Beams
  • Land Departure Alert

Engine

The new car gets a new option of the 2.8-liter 4-cylinder turbodiesel (1GD-FTV), producing 201hp and 500Nm of torque. According to the company, the new engine improves fuel efficiency with reliability, low noise, and great off-road performance. The engine is mated with 6-speed Super ECT automatic transmission, sending power to all four wheels through the 4WD system.

Meanwhile, the old 4.5-liter V8 turbodiesel with 202hp and 430Nm of torque remains available for all variants, mated with a 5-speed manual transmission.

The new Toyota Land Cruiser 70 Series will be available in Japan in the coming winters after it arrives in Australia in the fourth quarter of 2023. The pricing and details about its availability will be revealed later.
