Punjab Launches Virtual Smart Cards

The Punjab Excise Department is taking a leap into the digital realm due to a backlog in delivering physical vehicle registration cards. In an effort to streamline the process and minimize delays, they are set to introduce virtual smart cards for vehicle registration across the province.

Smart Cards  Backlog

Previously, the excise department was struggling to issue new cards. The Excise department issued over 80,000 registration cards before the temporary extension concluded. The department issued a late tender to avoid a standstill, yet progress beyond the technical bid phase has been sluggish.

The current dilemma sees the Excise department grappling with a backlog of 2.5 million number plates.

Adding to the complications, the cost of smart registration cards for cars and motorbikes in Punjab is expected to increase substantially. This surge is attributed to the remarkable rise in the US dollar’s exchange rate against the Pakistani Rupee. The contract awarded in 2018 with the dollar valued at Rs. 140 has seen an astronomical increase, now exceeding Rs. 280.

Virtual Smart Cards

To tackle the delay issue, the Excise Department is considering an alternative approach by introducing virtual smart cards. These cards will serve as a digital counterpart to the traditional physical registration cards and can be obtained online.

Swift Approval Needed

The Excise Department has already submitted a summary to the provincial government seeking approval for the implementation of virtual smart cards. Once approved, this digital solution will be swiftly rolled out, offering a convenient and efficient way for vehicle owners to complete their registration.

Online Convenience for Citizens

With virtual smart cards, citizens can complete their vehicle registration process entirely online. The Excise Department’s website will host the downloadable cards, ensuring easy access for all vehicle owners in the province.

Doorstep Service and Helpline

In an additional effort to enhance convenience, the Excise Department has recently launched a doorstep service for vehicle registration. By dialing the Punjab Information Technology Board’s helpline 080008786, citizens can request the doorstep service, where a department representative will arrive at their location to complete the registration process on the spot.
