Ford is recalling about 14,500 Fusion plug-in hybrid (PHEV) sedans from the model years 2019 and 2020 because a damaged battery energy control module (BECM) can result in a loss of power or fire, increasing the risk of a crash or injury.

The problem, the automaker tells federal safety officials, is “the BECM may become damaged due to excessive voltage and current flow.”

The company knows of no accidents or injuries, but two customer complaints potentially related to this issue have been filed.

Ford advises owners not to charge their vehicles until a remedy can be completed. The automaker is currently working on a fix. It will be mailing out notices to affected owners on July 10. Ford will send out a second letter when a remedy is determined.

Many cars are recalled, often more than once, during their lifespan. Automakers try to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Find out whether your vehicle has any outstanding recalls with the easy VIN tool at our recall center.
