Welcome back to Hobby Car Corvettes, located in Martinsburg, Pennsylvania. As avid Vette’ enthusiasts, we live, breathe, and dream Corvettes: and the launch of the new 2020 Chevy Corvette Stingray, is nothing short of a Corvette lover’s dream come true.
Chevrolet knew it was time to shake it up, and they certainly delivered. With only one single feature being carried over from the C7 generation, the 2020 Corvette introduces the C8 generation with style, superior design, and functionality.
It seems the design and release of the 8th generation of Corvettes has been in the works for some time, as spy photos have been popping up for at least 3 years.
The wait is over, so let’s talk C8s!
FORM AND FUNCTION
In true Corvette “form and function” fashion, the sleek design of the 2020 Corvette is not only about stunning appearances, but also driver experience and functionality.
For starters, the door handles and hatch and hood releases have all been cleverly hidden to maintain clean lines while also improving aerodynamics. But the brilliant design doesn’t stop there.
THE CONVERTIBLE
Corvette has long been known for its stylish convertibles. Integrated into the 2020 Corvette Stingray, we will see the very first production retractable two-piece hardtop. The days of clunky, difficult to remove and store hardtops are gone. Chevrolet has combined brilliant engineering and seamless design to bring us this impressive feature. With the push of a button, the hardtop gracefully flows back into the body and can activate at speeds up to 30 mph. Additionally, the Stingray maintains high performance capabilities even with the top down.
One concern many people have when it comes to convertible, is the lack of storage. The 2020 Corvette Convertible has addressed and eliminated this convertible woe. The all-new front cargo space is large enough to carry an airline-size overhead bag and the trunk can store the size of two golf bags, or the removable roof panel. This is an impressive amount of storage in comparison to many convertibles.
INTERIOR FEATURES
When it came to designing the interior of the next generation of Corvettes, Chevy left nothing to be desired. With the ultimate driver experience in mind, every little detail and feature has been carefully considered. Every button has been placed exactly where it should be to maintain comfort, and align with driver intuition. And because every driver is different in shape, size, and preference, there are three seat combinations to choose from.
The interior console is strongly influenced by a fighter-jet layout, giving it a sharp and sleek appearance. One of the greatest influences is that you will find the climate and heated/ventilated seat controls to the right of the driver within easy reach, positioned lower in the cockpit.
Of course, you can’t have a sports car without a sleek steering wheel. While the cockpit may carry heavy influences from a fighter-jet, the steering wheel is inspired by cars built strictly for racing. With optimal visibility and comfort in mind, the flat-top and bottom steering wheel includes large paddle shifters, audio controls, and a Z-mode button.
THE MID ENGINE DESIGN
The brand new LT2 V8 engine is visible through a see-through rear hatch window. We love this very cool feature! Let’s be honest, a Corvette could look exactly like a Corvette, but they would not be what they are without the brilliant mechanics under the hood. This year, they are showcasing that very point. If you’re an engine enthusiast and this feature appeals to you , you can also choose an Engine Appearance Package that adds carbon-fiber components and LED lights to illuminate the engine.
The next-generation 6.2L small block V8 LT2 engine we will see in 2020 keeps pace with the traditional Corvette power and performance. Producing 495 horsepower and 470 lb-ft of torque, when equipped with the performance exhaust, we get to experience the most horsepower and torque for any entry Corvette.
The mid-engine design is not only sleek and innovative. The placement of the engine shifts weight to the rear wheels, providing better balance and handling.. Additionally, with the windshield now over the front wheels, there is notably improved downforce without the need for an air dam.
DID YOU KNOW…
In an article from AutoWeek, it is being discussed that Chevrolet may be underrating the potential of this engine. Motor Trend decided to do some dyno pulls on a test car, and found that it could produce up to 558 hp and 515 lb-ft of torque. In order to ensure this wasn’t just a random result, they performed the test several more times and received similar numbers. We can’t know for sure what’s at play here, but this information is worth considering.
