Toyota, known for its prowess in hybrids, is stepping into the electric vehicle (EV) arena with the unveiling of its “Urban SUV” concept – an EV crossover. Despite being fashionably late to the EV party, the Japanese automaker aims to make a splash in Europe with this small electric crossover.

Affordable EV Crossover

Set to hit the market in the first half of 2024; the Urban SUV is poised to become the cheapest Toyota EV in Europe. This compact crossover will join the ranks alongside Toyota’s hybrid and plug-in hybrid C-HR models, marking the brand’s commitment to electrification.

Stylish and Compact Design

With dimensions measuring 169.2 inches in length, 71.6 inches in width, and 63.7 inches in height, the Urban SUV concept boasts a compact yet stylish design. Built on a dedicated EV platform, it promises both front- and all-wheel-drive options, offering versatility to potential buyers.

Powertrain Options

Customers can choose between single- and dual-motor configurations, showcasing Toyota’s dedication to providing tailored options for diverse driving needs. While the battery sizes remain undisclosed, the Urban SUV is expected to offer flexibility in power and range.

The concept’s somewhat chunky styling aligns with Toyota’s bZ models, hinting at the brand’s future design language for EVs. While labeled as a concept, the production model is anticipated to retain much of its distinctive character, with minor tweaks like the shift to regular side mirrors.

Toyota Electric Lineup Strategy

This Urban SUV is part of Toyota’s grand plan to have around 15 zero-emission models on sale in Europe by 2026. The automaker has set ambitious targets, aiming for over 20% of its European annual deliveries to be represented by EVs by 2026. Six dedicated EVs are scheduled for launch between now and then, showcasing Toyota’s commitment to a sustainable automotive future.
