Toyota Motor Co has initiated a recall of one million vehicles, citing a concerning airbag defect that could compromise safety. This recall covers various Toyota and Lexus models produced between 2020 and 2022.

Toyota Airbag Defect

The focal point of this recall is a potential defect in sensors located in the front passenger seat. These sensors, found in popular models like Avalon, Camry, and RAV4, may have been improperly manufactured, increasing the risk of short-circuiting. This malfunction can impact the airbag system’s ability to accurately gauge the occupant’s weight, potentially leading to failed airbag deployment in specific collision scenarios.

Affected Toyota Models

Owners of vehicles like Highlander, Sienna, Corolla, and Lexus ES250 and RX350 SUVs are urged to pay attention, as their models fall within the recall spectrum.

To address this safety concern, Toyota and Lexus dealers will conduct inspections on the Occupant Classification System (OCS) sensors. If needed, these sensors will be replaced at no cost to the vehicle owners. The notification process for affected customers is expected to conclude by mid-February 2024.

Multiple Recalls

This marks Toyota’s third significant recall in recent months, following recalls related to RAV4 sport utility vehicles and Toyota Highlander SUVs. The company’s commitment to ensuring vehicle safety is underscored by the comprehensive nature of this latest recall.

Toyota is not alone in grappling with recall challenges. General Motors (GM), Ford, Volkswagen, and Hyundai have all faced substantial recalls, sharing concerns over airbag inflators. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) is pushing for a broad-scale recall to address the risks associated with these airbag inflators.
