Volkswagen prepares to launch a new electric vehicle on January 3rd at Las Vegas CES.
Well, it won’t be that simple, the German carmaker announced that the new mysterious vehicle will appear under camouflage, but at least, the name will be revealed at the event. After the announcement ceremony is over, the attendees will be invited to discover the car properly on January 5th. During what the company calls;
“The next step in Volkswagen’s electrification journey”.
This piece of news opened the door to a lot of speculation, what model will WV reveal at CES? Some observers made their educated guess already, they expect that the promised car is the production version of the ID Aero, calculating that the time is ripe to reveal the car almost six months after the concept was uncovered. The new Volkswagen sedan will be the brand’s first global EV, destined to be sold in China, Europe, and the United States.
If that turns out to be true, then we can say we have a good idea about the upcoming model. The Aero concept is a premium mid-size sedan built upon the MEB platform. The eclectic motors are supplied by a 77 kWh lithium-ion battery pack that has enough power to go for 385 miles (620 km) on a single charge. The concept also revealed elaborate aerodynamics that have a low drag coefficient of 0.23.
Needless to say, the production model that we’re about to discover won’t have a lot of bells and whistles that we saw on the concept. But, as was already seen in numerous spy photos (of the ID.7), the car preserved a lot of the aerodynamic design. Other design features include flush-mounted door handles and aerodynamically optimized wheels. And in keeping with the trend, the interior will have a digital instrument cluster and a large floating infotainment system.
There’s no word about the motors’ power yet, but if we can take the ID.4 as a reference, then the new model will have a rear-wheel drive variant offering 201 hp. Or an all-wheel model powered by two motors with a combined output of 295 hp.
