Featured on AutoHunter, the online auction platform driven by ClassicCars.com, is this 1985 Buick Grand National.
The Grand National is a muscle car that rolls incognito. Its blacked-out exterior features add to the stealth-factor, and this sports coupe from the 1980s packs a serious punch under the hood. Specifically, its torque comes from a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 mated to a four-speed automatic transmission. This low-mileage Grand National is offered on AutoHunter with documentation, a clean CARFAX report, and a clear title by the selling dealer in Oregon.
Showing just 93,080 miles on the odometer, this 38-year-old Grand National shows quality fit and finish both inside and out. The exterior was refinished in the original black, and the inside has been reupholstered. Aside from a set of black-finished aftermarket wheels, the car appears to retain original equipment which is rare to find these days.
The Grand National first debuted in early 1982 as a high-performance variant of the second-generation Buick Regal. At the time, it rode on the General Motors G-body platform which was shared with the Oldsmobile Cutlass and other vehicles. The Grand National name came from the NASCAR Winston Cup Grand National Series, so using that name seemed like a fitting way to market this Buick model as a performance-built offering. By 1984, the Grand National production was in full swing, and all models were painted black as shown here.
As for that special motor: Under the hood lives a turbocharged 3.8-liter V6 that was rated at 200 horsepower and 300 lb-ft of torque. This powertrain, though smaller in displacement than a V8, was known for its performance: The Grand National could complete a quarter-mile race in 15.2 seconds in stock form. The model would live on through 1987 when it was replaced by a more rounded and significantly less performance-tuned third-generation Regal.
The listing states that this Grand National received a transmission rebuild within the last 2,000 miles, and a safety inspection has also been completed.
These special performance cars turned heads when they were new, and finding an unmodified survivor with fewer than 100,000 miles on the odometer is even more rare today. This could be the perfect chance to scoop one up!
