When Buick introduced its 1967 lineup, it was a mix of old and new. Old was the A-body series (Special, Special Deluxe, Skylark, and Gran Sport), which was a carry-over from 1966; ditto the Riviera. New was a redesigned full-size series (LeSabre, Wildcat, and Electra). However, new for all models was a series of big-blocks replacing the “Nailhead” measuring 400 and 430cid.

That meant the GS 400 now featured a 340-horsepower 400, and sitting atop was a nifty “Star Wars” air cleaner. It also meant that Buick’s performance offerings were more in line with the competition’s, though there are fans of the previous 401 who claim they didn’t suffer beating the competition despite the 325-horse rating.
