  • Totally redesigned for 2024
  • Standard all-wheel drive
  • More refined

The 2024 Subaru Crosstrek takes a winning small wagon/SUV formula and adds more refinement. Competing against the likes of the Kia Seltos, Chevrolet Trailblazer, Hyundai Kona, and Volkswagen Taos, the new Crosstrek continues to come standard with all-wheel drive (AWD) and offers a choice of two “flat” 4-cylinder engines paired to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT).

For the 2024 model year, Subaru stiffened the chassis, fine-tuned the Crosstrek suspension, and gave it a freshened exterior and interior redesign. An available 11.6-inch infotainment touchscreen is offered for the first time in Subaru’s best-selling model, and the rugged Wilderness trim is added to the range. Among other features like all-terrain tires and black exterior body cladding, the Wilderness adds 0.6 inches to the Crosstrek’s already ample 8.7 inches of ground clearance.

Let’s take a look at what the 2024 Subaru Crosstrek has to offer.

Passenger Room and Comfort

The Crosstrek packs a lot of passenger space into its relatively small proportions. This is a great pick for car shoppers who want the added interior space of a typical SUV but can live without a vehicle that’s oversized and burdensome in city traffic.

Five trims are offered: Base, Premium, Sport, Touring, and Wilderness. The entry-level Crosstrek comes with cloth seating upholstery, manually adjustable front seats, dual 7-inch infotainment touchscreens, and dual-zone climate control.

Thanks to its 36.5 inches of rear legroom, there’s good space for at least two adults in the second row. Headroom is abundant in either row, and outward visibility is very good. For more luxury in your Subaru wagon-meets-SUV, heated seats, leather seating surfaces, a power-adjustable driver’s seat, and a moonroof are available. The Wilderness has the distinction of being equipped with water-resistant upholstery for quicker cleanups after soggy outdoor adventuring.

Features and Tech

A dual 7-inch infotainment display is standard on the 2024 Crosstrek. This system is perfectly fine in terms of usability and response times, but upgrading to the Premium trim brings with it the new attention-grabbing 11.6-inch touchscreen interface.

The bigger touchpoints, logical menus, and crisp graphics make it a breeze to use while driving. In addition to the standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto compatibility found on the base infotainment unit, this adds a Wi-Fi hot spot and additional USB ports for both rows of seating.

Of course, we’d be doing a disservice to the Crosstrek if we didn’t mention that all-wheel drive is standard on every trim. This commonly commands an upcharge on competing small SUVs or, in some cases, isn’t offered even as an option. In keeping with its off-roading image, features like hill descent control and drive modes for tackling all sorts of slippery driving conditions are standard, too.

If you’re more interested in the ‘softer’ side of what the 2024 Crosstrek has to offer, additional extras like keyless entry, push-button start, heated front seats, and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon stereo are available on upper trims.

Safety is also taken into consideration since every Crosstrek comes with what Subaru calls its EyeSight bundle of driver-assist technologies. These include forward collision warning and automatic emergency braking, pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist, adaptive cruise control, and automatic high beams. Additional features like blind-spot monitoring and rear cross-traffic alert are available, starting with the Premium trim.

Materials and Design

True to previous generations, the cabin of the updated 2024 Crosstrek prioritizes functionality over frills. That’s fine with us because the result is a no-nonsense cabin that feels capable of withstanding many miles of driving duty.

Redesigned front seats offer plenty of support for longer journeys, and we’ve already mentioned the adult-friendly level of headroom and legroom for occupants in the second row.

The water-resistant interior upholstery and cargo area of the Wilderness trim is a nice bonus for Crosstrek drivers who intend to take their Subaru into, well, the wilderness. This model also boasts a maximum towing capacity of 3,500 pounds versus the 1,500-pound limit that applies to the rest of the Crosstrek lineup.

Cargo Room and Flexibility

The Crosstek’s tidy dimensions and wagon-like shape mean it’s maneuverable and can squeeze into tight parking spots. That’s great, and better is that cargo space isn’t sacrificed in the name of these city-friendly proportions.

Behind the split-folding rear seatback is 19.9 cubic feet of cargo volume. Fold down that rear seat, and load-lugging capacity rings in at more than 54 cubic feet. Granted, some rivals like the Nissan Kicks and Honda HR-V have more overall space. Yet the Crosstrek’s low load floor and wide liftgate make it easier – and less of a literal pain – when you need to get cumbersome items into the back.

Subaru also offers an extensive lineup of cargo-toting options, including roof-mounted awnings, bike racks, plus pet-friendly seat covers and collapsible kennels.
