Kia issued a recall for about 23,000 Borrego SUVs from model years 2009 to 2014 because, in an accident, the side curtain airbags could send headliner plates flying into the passenger cabin, possibly injuring occupants.

Sharp-eyed car followers have probably noticed that this recall covers 2009 to 2014, but Kia only sold the Borrego in the U.S. during the 2009 model year. The recall notice says, “All 2010-2014 model year Borrego vehicles manufactured from October 20, 2009 through May 14, 2013 sold in the U.S. Territories (68). The 2010-2014 model year Borrego vehicles were not sold in the U.S.” When we contacted Kia for clarification, a Kia spokesperson said, “Essentially, Kia America is managing the process for the small population of vehicles,” presumably those sold in U.S. Territories like Puerto Rico and Guam.

Kia tells the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration that “insufficient adhesive” attaching the plates causes the problem. The company is aware of just one customer complaint and no injuries related to the problem.

Dealers fix it by applying “industrial-grade adhesive tape over the left and right headliner plates to further secure the plates to the headliner.”

Recall repairs are always free.

Manufacturers recall many cars at least once. They attempt to contact every owner but don’t always reach them all. Find out if your vehicle needs any recall-related repairs at our recall center.
